What is the Florida Legislature considering for alimony reform?

Large changes to Florida law are likely to happen when it comes to the determination of alimony. This is likely to happen next year. The legislature has been working on it for years and I believe that now is likely the time it’s gong to happen. In general, what the legislature’s trying to do is to systematize the determination of alimony much like they did the child support nearly 20 years ago. To turn the determination of alimony from what it is to now, which is a relatively unwieldy and expensive and difficulty to predict type of scenario into more of a formula that is predictable, whether or not that formula is fair or not in all circumstances. While I can’t tell you exactly what the ending bill will look like, I have a pretty good idea and you can expect somewhat of an alimony formula, which will dramatically change how alimony is determined. It will be primarily based upon the relative incomes of the parties and the numbers of years that they’ve been married.
